Yet, we don’t have to continue living this way.  We can simply stop rewarding ourselves with food.  Lasting Weight Loss. However, it may not be that simple.  We will have to change our mindset—to develop alternative systems of rewards.  While this may seem difficult at first, it can be accomplished in time.

Rewards Ideas

Here are some ideas for rewards that do not involve food. In a world where we often turn to snacks and sweets as a “treat,” it can be refreshing and invigorating to explore rewards that nurture our well-being in different, non-food-related ways.

Schedule Some Playtime

As adults, we often forget the pure joy that comes from play. Schedule some time dedicated just for fun! Whether that means hitting a tennis ball back and forth with a friend, diving into a video game, or simply blowing bubbles in your backyard, allow yourself that time away from responsibilities. Lasting Weight Loss. Engaging in playful activities can help you feel more relaxed and rejuvenated, enhancing your overall mood. Remember, play is not just for children; it’s a key ingredient in maintaining mental health and creativity for all ages.

Go Shopping at a Dollar Store

Indulge in the thrill of bargain hunting at your local dollar store. You may not spend much, but the excitement of discovering hidden gems can be incredibly rewarding. From craft supplies to household items, these stores often offer a wide variety of products. Lasting Weight Loss. Perhaps you can find a new mug that speaks to you, decorative plants, or fun toys for the kids. The process of browsing and choosing items can provide a refreshing change of pace and might even spark your creativity.

Share Quality Time with Your Pet

Pets can be incredibly comforting companions, and spending quality time with them can be a great reward for yourself. Lasting Weight Loss. Grab some new pet toys and engage in a game of fetch with your dog at the park or simply cuddle up on the couch with your cat while watching your favorite show. Taking time to connect with your furry friend can boost your mood, relieve stress, and deepen your bond. This simple act of joy can remind you of life’s small pleasures and the happiness pets bring to our lives.

Indulge in a Makeover

Treat yourself to a makeover at the cosmetics counter in your local department store. Allow a professional to enhance your features and give you a fresh look. Trying new makeup techniques or products can be a fun way to express your personality and creativity. Lasting Weight Loss. This experience can also rejuvenate your self-esteem, making you feel empowered and confident. Look for makeup tutorials or inspiration before you go—stepping out looking and feeling fabulous is its own reward!

Spend a Day at a Spa

Giving yourself the gift of relaxation can be any person’s perfect reward. Book a day at a spa for some much-deserved pampering. Enjoy a soothing massage, facials, or aromatherapy treatments to melt away stress and tension. Many spas also offer packages, so you can indulge in multiple treatments. Lasting Weight Loss. Make sure to take your time to enjoy amenities like saunas, hot tubs, or relaxation rooms. Choosing to invest time in self-care is not just a luxury; it is essential for your mental and physical health.

Volunteer at a Local School

Giving back is one of the most fulfilling ways to reward yourself. Consider volunteering an hour or two at your local elementary school. Whether it’s assisting in a classroom, reading to children, or helping with arts and crafts, you’ll be making a positive impact in the community while experiencing the joy of being around children. Their enthusiasm and innocence are often contagious, and your contribution can create lasting memories, not only for you but also for the students you help.

Take Your Children to the Playground or Rollerskating

If you have children, treating them to a day at the playground or a fun-filled outing at a roller rink or swim club can be just as rewarding for you. Engaging in activities that excite them can leave you feeling refreshed and energized. Invite their friends along for added fun, and unleash your inner child by joining in on the games. This time spent together is not only enjoyable but also creates memories that will last a lifetime.

Buy a New CD or Listen to Music

In our digital age, nothing quite compares to the joy of holding a physical CD from your favorite artist. Reward yourself by visiting a music store and picking up a new album. Spend some dedicated time listening to it, ideally in a calm space where you can absorb the melodies and lyrics fully. Music can transport you and evoke powerful emotions, serving as a superb mood elevator. You could even create a cozy atmosphere, dim the lights, and immerse yourself in the experience.

Play Your Favorite Instrument

If you play a musical instrument, take some time just for you to sit down and play a few tunes. Let the music flow through you; it can be a great way to unwind and express yourself. Whether you choose to practice scales, learn a new piece, or simply improvise, the act of playing can be incredibly therapeutic. Music has an unparalleled ability to elevate your mood, allowing you to escape into a world of sound and emotion.

In summary, rewarding yourself does not have to revolve around food. There are countless ways to treat yourself that can invigorate your mind and spirit, enhancing your overall well-being. Whether you choose to embrace nature, engage in playful activities, spoil yourself with self-care, or give back to the community, these rewards can create joy and fulfillment in your life. Prioritize your happiness and take the time to relish in life’s little pleasures!

If you don’t like the idea of developing an alternative reward system, consider simply varying your routine.  If you’ve become accustomed to rewarding yourself with a high-calorie cappuccino in the morning, spend some time in quiet prayer or reflection instead.  If you feel as if you’ll be tempted to raid a candy store on your way home from work, take an alternate route instead.  In general, keeping busy can prevent you from indulging in food rewards.  For instance, you might be so busy reading or knitting that you simply don’t have time to reach for a snack.

Making a conscious decision to no longer use food as a reward is certainly counter-cultural.  We have been conditioned to believe that there should be a plate of brownies at the end of the rainbow and that heaven is just one hot fudge sundae after another.  While the food itself isn’t bad, our expectations about food can be.

The first step to ending a food addiction may be to recognize that food can no longer serve as our reward. While it can be rough getting out of the food-as-reward habit, it is well worth the effort. If we no longer view food as the prize, we will organize our day differently.  We’ll devote our mealtimes to food, and the rest of our day to something else.  We will eat only those foods designed to help us stay healthy and we’ll be in better shape as a result.
